FIREFIGHTERS say carelessly discarded smoking materials were the cause of a fire in a discount freezer shop.
Fire crews from Mossley attended the blaze at Jack Fulton’s on Old Street Ashton following reports that of a fire in an upstairs storeroom at 11am on Monday.
The shop was evacuated along with the adjoining Willow Wood charity shop and Kiosk Newsagents while fire crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to extinguish the flames.
Ladysmith centre manager Lynne Williams said she was alerted to the incident when the fire alarm rang in the centre offices: “We went running and found there was smoke coming from the upstairs window.
“By the time I got there the staff were outside and the fire service were dealing with it - there was a lot of smoke.”
Willow Wood charity shop manager Moira Couper added: “One of my volunteers came upstairs and told me there was a fire next door. It was then a case of getting my staff out and locking the shop.
“I went across the road. The fire fighters knocked the windows out to stop them blowing out. Then all the smoke came out of the window and into my shop which wasn’t very nice!
